Question:

What size wheelie bin is appropriate for my clinical waste ?

Answer:

The size of the bin used ultimately depends on how much clinical waste you generate.  At SteriHealth we offer three sizes of wheelie bins.  A 120L , 240L and 660L.  SteriHealth can arrange for an Account Manager to visit your site to help you assess this and advise what best suits your site.

Question:

What frequency should my waste be collected ?

Answer:

SteriHealth offers various frequencies ranging from every day/night (for large hospitals), once a week, once a fortnight and so on right up to once every 12 weeks.  Alternatively, you can arrange to be an on call customer.  This means you call our customer service office to arrange service when it is required.  Your frequency depends on how much waste your site generates.  If you require help with assessing this, an Account Manager can visit your site.

Question:

Can I organise for only a single sharps container to be collected ?

Answer:

SteriHealth is happy to accommodate every customer to their specific needs.

Question:

Why is compliance to the Australian Standard for disposable containers so important ?

Answer:

Using a container that does not comply to the AS-4031 standard means your probability of sharp and needle stick injury is greatly enhanced.  There are many reasons why containers may not comply to the AS4031 standard - these include;

  • Penetration potential
  • Failure of leak test (particularly 2 piece nested containers)
  • Lids that will not securely remain closed
  • Incorrect or insufficient labelling

Using a non-AS4031 container for sharps puts workers, their colleagues and the waste disposals companies at unnecessary risk when handling the full containers.

You should check your current container to see if it complies to the AS4031 Standard - if it doesn't, it's simple - DON'T USE IT !

Question:

Can I put needles and sharps into the 20 litre pail ?

Answer:

No !  The 20 Litre Pail does not comply to the AS4031 standard - due to thin material in the lid - and hence SteriHealth do not recommend that the 20 Litre Pail be used for any sharps or needles.

Alternatively, an approved Sharps container should be used concurrently to accommodate the needles and sharps, whilst using the 20 Litre pail exclusively for softer Bohazardous waste.

Question:

What is the difference between a screw top and funnel cap disposable container ?

Answer:

The BIO-CAN is available is either screw cap OR push/funnel cap format in most sizes across the range of disposable containers.

Choice of either is a personal preference mainly driven by the clinical application, preferred opening diameter, container location and desire to denotch.

As these factors all play in the decision, SteriHealth have decided to offer either cap solution to broaden the flexibility of the Product Range.

Question:

Will the BIO-CAN containers fit into existing BD holders and brackets ?

Answer:

In the great majority of cases - YES !  Please contact SteriHealth on 1300 66 77 87 to advise of your current BD container and we can advise instantly the recommended alternate BIO-CAN container and confirm your continued usage of the holders you have already purchased.

SteriHealth's aim is to make your transition to the BIO-CAN product line as simple as possible.
